Climate crisis: Grassrivers of GTA 6 might outlive the real-life Everglades
One of the most captivating moments from the gameplay video of GTA 6, eagerly awaited by millions of gamers and released on Netflix and later on YouTube, was Grassrivers. This wetland region, the real-life equivalent of the Everglades, is facing the devastating effects of the climate crisis

When the highly anticipated crime thriller Grand Theft Auto VI's Extended Look dropped on Netlfix, gamers worldwide were captivated by the sweeping, sun-drenched wetlands of Grassrivers. The digital region, a sprawling, atmospheric expanse of flooded grasslands, airboats, and prowling alligators, is a stunning love letter to the real-world Florida Everglades. But while the fictional Leonida wetlands will be immortalized in code, its real-life counterpart is quietly fighting for its life.
The fragile reality
In the virtual world of GTA 6, Grassrivers is a wild, untamed frontier. You can almost feel the humidity and smell the sawgrass. But the real Everglades is less than half its original size. A century of human development, canals, and levees severely disrupted the natural flow of fresh water from Lake Okeechobee down to the Florida Bay. Now, climate change is accelerating a crisis that could erase this unique ecosystem entirely.
Saltwater intrusion a massive risk
The Everglades is a remarkably flat, low-lying wetland. Its soil, made of organic peat, is highly sensitive to the balance of fresh and salt water.
Here is how the climate crisis is unraveling the ecosystem:
Rising seas: The sea level in South Florida has already risen by about 11 inches since the 1930s, and is projected to rise another 10 to 17 inches by 2040. As the ocean pushes inland, saltwater breaches freshwater marshes.
The collapse of the soil: When saltwater intrudes into freshwater peat, it causes the organic soil to rapidly break down and collapse. The land actually sinks, transforming vibrant marshes into open water.
Habitat loss: As the landscape sinks and turns into open water, critical habitats for wading birds, panthers, and alligators vanish. Mangroves are migrating further inland to replace the dying sawgrass, permanently altering the region's biodiversity.
A race against time
In Grassrivers, a quick respawn fixes everything. In reality, scientists and conservationists are locked in a massive, multi-billion-dollar restoration effort to send the water south, pushing fresh water back through the Everglades to fight off the invading saltwater and protect the region's drinking water supply.
The stunning virtual wetlands of GTA 6 serve as an unintended time capsule. Without immediate and sustained climate action, the vibrant, dangerous, and beautiful ecosystem that inspired Grassrivers could eventually become a memory, swallowed by the rising tide.
