Türkan Şoray, the "Sultan" of Turkish cinema, is set to bring art and ecology together within the scope of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), which will be held in Antalya. As part of a series of events themed "Turkey: A Country That Names Its Cinema After a Tree – From Yeşilçam to 'Green' Sets," Şoray will discuss the creative, waste-free production model developed by the Yeşilçam era—a period defined by its ability to achieve great results despite limited resources.

At the summit, taking place from November 9 to 20, the climate crisis will be examined not only through its scientific and political dimensions but also through the lens of the arts and culture sector. In this context, a special session titled "Sustainability in Cinema: Filmmaking the 'Yeşilçam' Way" will be held on November 16 at 7:00 PM in the Ahmet Yesevi Hall at the COP31 Congress Center.

Moderated by Birol Güven, General Director of Cinema, the discussion will feature Türkan Şoray sharing insights drawn from her decades-long career. She will offer a firsthand account of the practices of the Yeşilçam era—a time when materials and sets were constantly repurposed, and cinematic wonders were created with limited budgets and equipment.

The concept of "green filmmaking"—which has emerged as a key agenda item for the global film industry in recent years—aims to reduce carbon footprints, curb energy consumption, and establish production sets that are respectful of the natural environment. The "producing more with fewer resources" reflex—adopted by the Yeşilçam era out of economic and technical necessity—offers a natural and authentic source of inspiration for today’s deliberate, eco-friendly pursuits. This upcoming gathering aims to blend the practical ingenuity of Turkish cinema’s past with a vision for ecologically conscious filmmaking in the future.
